I grew up in west Texas and spent lots of my childhood on road trips to see family. We listened to a lot of country music as we trekked across the desert in our wood-paneled station wagon. And my dad’s favorite musicians throughout the 1970s were, hands-down, the bad-boy crew of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristoferson.
So when this band of outlaws formed their own supergroup in the early 80s, my dad was overjoyed. We listened to the Highwaymen every day on the way to school for a at least a year. I know all the words to this song. I can still mentally call up the unique inflections of each singer’s own gravely voice without even listening to the actual song.
Listen to the words if you want…it’s about reincarnation. And it features Johnny Cash singing about riding a spaceship! It just doesn’t get any better. And it reminds me of my dad.
