Parenting in general, San Francisco Public Schools, Urban Middle Class

Wabbit Season

I think that our family is one of about ten public school families in the City who are not going to Tahoe for the weekend.

School is out today and tomorrow due to Chinese New Year (yay!) and a supposed money-saving-budget-reduction furlough day (boo!). Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year calendar for year 4708, Year of the Rabbit. Gung Hay Fat Choy!

This means that us public school folks get some time off and pretend to be fancy like the private school people who get a week off every spring for what is called “Ski Week.” And tons of people I know are rushing off to Tahoe in celebration.

But we’re less fancy so we’re at home. And my Little One is sick. Again. Poor kid. So we’re not even out enjoying this fabulous sunny San Francisco weather that has us gloating even as we feel bad for our friends across the country who are buried in snow and ice. (Don’t worry. You’ll laugh at us when we are yet again shivering in our fleece instead of romping on the beach this summer. It’s a trade off.)

My consolation is that at least we are not in Tahoe with a miserable sick kid. Right?
